Whistling-DucksTheir legs are long for ducks and stick out behind when they fly. They are slighter and more upright than the usual duck. Like swans and geese, and unlike most ducks, male and female whistling ducks are similar in appearance, though the female is slightly larger.

SwansSwans are the largest members of the waterfowl. Their long necks allow them to feed on the bottom of ponds and rivers. The northern hemisphere species tend to be mostly white while saouthern members include various amounts of balack plumage. The male is called a "cob" and the female a "pen". The young are termed "cygnets" derived from the latin "cygnus" meaning swan.

GeeseGeese are medium to large birds, always associated with water with the exception of the Nēnē. The northern hemispere species are highly migratory and large flocks group on wintering grounds. Domesticated for centuries, with Greyleg Geese and Swan Geese forming their ancestery.

ShelducksShelducks are generally intermediate in size between the True Geese and Ducks. Thery are bulky and not particularily good fliers. Often very colorful, females usually have some white on the head. Aggressive to other birds including members of their own species.

Steamerducks The genus name Tachyeres comes from the greek "fast oars" and it refers to how the four members of this group often swim, paddling with their wings. This trait is the derivation of the english name "steamer" from paddle steamer. All members are from southern part of South America and are either flightless or poor flyers.

Torrent DucksThese three species have been grouped due to behavior similarities rather than genetically. They live on fast flowing rivers.

Perching DucksThe group known as Perching Ducks are waterfowl that use holes in trees to nest, and have long-clawed toes which felp them to scramble in trees.Thet are similar in size and appearance to Dabbling Ducks and are found worldwide.

Dabbling DucksThis group of ducks is named after the members method of dabbling at the waters surface to eat, as well as upending, they rarely dive.They tend to inhabite fresh water ponds and rivers. Their legs are near the center of their body allowing them to move easily on land.

PochardsThis is a large-bodied group of ducks, sometimes referred to as bay ducks where they are commonly found. Males are commonly grey or black, often with reddish heads. Females are brown. They dive deeply to feed and form large rafts in winter.

Sea DucksSea ducks are a waterfowl group well adapted to life at sea. Much of their life is spent alnog the northern coasts including winter. They are the best divers, going to great depths for their food.

Stiff-tailsAs the name describes, these species have stiff tail feathers, held erect when at rest. They have large bills and feet placed well back, making them awkward on land.
