Ring of Brodgar

 

The Orkney Islands, situated between the mainland of Scotland and the Shetlands, are a mecca for photographers. 

The landscape opportunities are tremendous. Great rolling hills, beautiful seashores, all topped off by some interesting weather.

 

 

 

 

As well as natural habitats, there have been thousands of years of man's history that has made its mark on the island. neolithic dwellings and monuments, Norse settlements and the beautiful seaside towns of present day. Due to the lack of trees, there are many stone structure which a photographer can use.

The bird life is also amazing, although the number of species you could expect to see is not large, it is made up for by the quality. There are an amazing number of "good" birds ... Auks, Skuas, Divers or Loons, Shorebirds etc. There is also a tremendous number of individuals of many species including huge bird cities breeding on some of the favoured cliffs.
